The crowded city streets of Paris were something of a novelty to young Anton
more accustommed as he was to the more provincial atmosphere of his home town.
Still all this bustle and activity did hold promise, at least things could not
possibly be dull.

He had wanted to get away from his old home for some time but his "uncle
Charles" had never been forthcoming with the necessary allowance, hardly
surprising given Anton's rather irregular birht. All that had changed when good
old "Uncle" had decided to get married again and wanted his potentially
embarassing offspring out of sight.

With almost indecent haste,a relatively full purse and insructions not to do
anything embarassing ringing in his ears, young Anton had found himself packed
off to the city.

The army was of course the only real choice for a man in Anton's position, but
which regiment. His relatively humble status did rather limit his prospects. As
he stood outside the Ministry of War he stared at a list of the regiments and
wondered where to begin.............
