I don't really see the contradiction between free (as in freedom not as in
beer) software and paying for some features. The code can be open and
downloadable, nonetheless YOU are hosting the game. Wordpress is not blamed
for offering paying hosting plans. Neither are companies that offer services
with Drupal, etc... Any player has the ability to download the code and run
it on his own servers. And in his own instance of the game he might offer
the very same features for free...

Farmville embeds features with virtual items (tractors and such). Many F2P
that involve managing some resources offer this kind of premium accounts. I
can't remember specific names but a quick search led me to this list :
