What is interesting, there is also a link, describing all In-Box writers. But may be I am wrong here - I just look at how people use diskshadow to backup Hyper-V and check what files are created when snapshot is requested... So the logic seems to be simple - create snapshot(s) of the volume(s) and use metadata xml files to backup all files listed (and some additional files as specified above).
