Reading and playing with DiskShadow command helps. I dd not use it much
yet, but I looked at what files each writer lists - very useful. Moreover,
there is a cab file created with XML files, describing everything what
needs to be backed up - what they call metadata.

This link is good, but it looks like it just lists some _additional _
things, which need to be taken care of - whatever is not listed in
metadata....
What is interesting, there is also a link, describing all In-Box writers.
But may be I am wrong here - I just look at how people use diskshadow to
backup Hyper-V and check what files are created when snapshot is
requested... So the logic seems to be simple - create snapshot(s) of the
volume(s) and use metadata xml files to backup all files listed (and some
additional files as specified above).
