Whatever you think, or have already tied, it is really likely a problem of 
password or a concurrency limit.

Unfortunately, I guess no one around as the gift to remotely read proof your 
configuration :-) 

So at least you have to compare what's inside bareos-dir.d/client/
EXTERNAL.conf
and the content of (on external fd) bareos-fd.d/director/MAIN-DIR.conf

double check equivalence of password, and also fd et dir name.
