Hello, all!

Like many others, I'm sure, I have greatly enjoyed listening to the recordings
and seeing the videos of professionals like Rob M., David van O., and David T.
Recently Rob expressed the desire that more people would share their
recordings, and though he may not have had in mind rank amateurs like myself,
having just learned how to upload a file with YouSendIt, I thought I would give
it a try.

I have been playing through the Barbe Manuscript, and the piece I have recorded is the
first, a Canon by Gaultier. For those interested in the details, my 70/74 cm. bass rider
lute is strung all in gut with trebles and octaves from Aquila and pistoy and gimped
basses from Gamut. I used an Edirol R-1 24-bit recorder, an M-Audio Duo preamp, and an
NTK Rode NTK microphone (something the guy in the guitar shop sold me before I read David
Taylor's advice). I increased the gain and ran the file through the "Stereo Ambience
Signal Only" of the Channel Blender of DC Art 6. I have no idea what that function
does, but up until I tried it for the first time a few days ago, my recordings sounded
horribly tinny. Now the sound quality is much better, though the uploaded version is
still not as good as the original.

I apologize in advance if anyone gets an ear-bleed from listening to my playing. Suggestions on recording techniques or ways to improve my playing are welcomed. If everything works correctly, you should be receiving an upload notification from YouSendIt. In case you don't, you can cut and paste the following link into you browser: http://download.yousendit.com/0BA2D4B221E16301
My thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to listen.

Best regards,

Stephen,

I'd really try and convert your WAV file to an mp3 file. You have a huge file that will take ages to download.

I've uploaded a few things (not on Baroque lute list) and Rob has been very supportive. No doubt some people are unimpressed. But I think it is a great idea for people at all sorts of level to have a go.

Did you find that as soon as you pressed the record button, you go to pieces? I'd like to play to the best of my ability but I've only go so much ability and half of that disappears when th little red light comes on!

I wonder if there is a freeware program that converts WAV files to mp3?

Stuart
