I just got another report today of similar behaviour... hopefully I can
test the device in person tomorrow.  I'm not sure what is causing it not
to
charge.  I'm told that this device works on other linux installs,
so maybe there is a system difference that matters.

Could you post your "lsusb -v" output when you get the above timeout?
And your "uname -a" output.
