Hi Andy,

Thanks for the patch!  I've applied it and in the process of reading through
the code, I did a few cleanup tasks as well.

I tested this on a 8310 and it still worked.  I had some trouble with an
8320, but I had trouble before the patch too.  That particular device resets
at the drop of a hat.

Any modem users are urged to help test this before release.
