Sounds like it is the device making this choice for you.

One more thing to check... when you're unable to mount the SD card,
can you run the following command and see if the Mass Storage endpoint
is available:

        lsusb -v

I assume it will show up, but would be interesting to see.

If it does, could you capture your kernel messages for a successful mount
and an unsuccessful mount, just to see the difference.  I'm assuming one
won't show the drive or something, but worth a check.
