So, if I understand you correctly, you're saying that lsusb does not
list the BlackBerry as a user, only as root?

Sometimes the BlackBerry needs a few seconds to settle.  Try plugging
in your device, waiting maybe 30 seconds, and then checking lsusb
again.

If lsusb doesn't show the device, even as a regular user, you have
some low level system issues to resolve before Barry can do anything.

You might also try blacklisting the berry_charge kernel module and the
usb_storage kernel module, during your tests.
