My guess is that you have your storm set to auto-enable the mass storage 
when connected to the computer. I've found that there are problems with 
this and things like VMWare and VirtualBox. Are you using either? Also, 
I've found with my Tour 9630, once you connect it to the computer, the 
phone will "reset" while bcharge is calibrating. You'll see the clock 
flicker once, and then it'll return to normal. What does lsusb -v tell you?
