Sorry for the delay, I was on a holiday.
Yes, it's odd, since I cannot reproduce it anymore.
Anyway, here is the test report:
Both versions could work fine after copying the rules to rules.d/, and 
then re-plug the device. Restarting udev doesn't work however. Whether 
the user is in group barry doesn't matter.
I don't know why the git version didn't work at the very first time, but 
now it is working as intended.
