Maybe I can say something here, though Tory may want to add some more.

We decided not to go with a full plug-in for BASE simply because BASE 2 
plug-ins are so difficult to develop, and we needed to get something up and 
running quickly.  Sorry, I hope this comes across as constructive criticism 
rather...

Why not store the files in BASE? Manual transform creator (1( might
help? Or using the same scheme as the MeV plug-in (2) that allows users
to stores data in BASE from within MeV?
