For those who've wondered "What was Joss Whedon thinking?" when he created Firefly--in the sense of "How long has it been since there's been a successful Western on TV?" Well, here's an answer. TABCJ aired on Fox in 1993-94, was not a great hit in the ratings and was cancelled by Fox. It was the coolest Western IMO, but that didn't translate into ratings. So what was the last great TV western series that was a ratings success, and when did it air? I dunno. Every search I've done on the subject led to the 1950s and I haven't looked beyond.
So after only, like, 12 years, Warner Bros. will apparently make it available on DVD, with newly created bonus material. I'm just glad I didn't have to wait that long for the Firefly DVDs:
