Meeting 844 September 25, 2006 Trey Haddad, President Chris Garcia, Vice-President Dave Gallaher, Treasurer Galen Tripp, Sargent at Arms Barbara Johnson-Haddad, Secretary Began 8:00 [with good timing] 28 people attended Secretary’s report: the minutes of meeting 843 were accepted as ’arrrr-tistic’ We established a party jar Treasurer’s report = we took in $62.00 last week in the regular jar [our total $8990.66] & $6.00 in the party jar [total $450.67] The VP reported that next week there will be a single copy of issue #99’s ‘Drink Tanks’ out, there’s a new ‘SfinSF’ out & he’s gotten into another film festival The President welcomed Arwen and Ilana Grune, visiting from the Netherlands [who go home this Wednesday] and while out here they won 3 costuming awards at Worldcon [as Novices]. Given a chance to speak, they giggled. The President also reminded the club that Silicon is coming up. The Party Committee reported that the BASFA party will be on both Friday and Saturday nights at Silicon in room 273, 8pm-midnight & Andy follow-on’d that the BASFA party adornments that he has in custody will be delivered to Ed at con Announcements Arwen announced that a convention, Utopia, will be the 3rd weekend in October at the Bilderberg Europa Hotel in the Hague, the Netherlands and encouraged us to attend [see = http://www.utopiasite.com/] Sue announced that she works for an arts council [see artscouncil.org] and that this year they are giving out an independent film fellowship Ken announced that ‘To Serve Man’ and ‘nightmare at 20,000 Feet’ will be shown on KTEH at 7pm Friday, between pledge breaks - so donate if you like the programming, plus that the 2nd season of ‘Dr Who’ will be showing this week on the SciFi channel Julie announced that the Royal Society is making their archives available online through December for free [tall] Kevin announced that he had one copy left of ‘Emerald City’ to give out - but there should be one more, post-ultimate issue to come out Dave C announced that Thog the Mighty now has a website = thog.org & it has many odd links Reviews: Howeird reviewed the Seymour Cray anniversary as not as boring as it could have been & reviewed ‘How to Survive a Robot Uprising’ as please don’t pay full price for it at BASFA auction Lisa reviewed Weird Al’s latest video on YouTube. ‘White and nerdy’ as very good and worth full price Harold reviewed ‘Flyboys’ as not quite as boring as it could have been , with stock characters, that there were planes in it and it was worth matinee or cable or skip it completely Bill reviewed Yosemite as they stayed at Camp Curry for $68.00 - where you get a tent; it sounded kind of basic, but has marvellous scenery. Arwen follow-on’d that she had a good time and ‘it’s big’. There were follow-on’s then it was rated as worth full price with benign weather Chris reviewed the ‘most average DVD of all time’ as it sucked information out of his brain [name withheld to save your sanity] and reviewed a book, ‘The Great Train Robbery’ [about the movie] as incredible - worth full price Ed reviewed Hawaii as worth full price and reviewed Scalzi’s ‘Old Man’s War’ as so good that it’s now his favorite book ever and touched him on many levels and reviewed the same author’s ‘ghost Brigade’ as not as good Julie reviewed a book on Ben Franklin, ‘Draw the Lightning Down’ as remarkably informative. Written cleverly and worth full price [evil] Kevin reviewed the Folsom Street Fair as it was full of incidents & they went to the pre-fair leather brunch and thought it was very nice Dave G reviewed Spring’s procedure as it went very well and she is recovering [tall] Kevin reviewed the last Cheryl Morgan Worldcon review as he will miss them and considered it well thought out Arwen also reviewed America and Worldcon as everyone was so nice! We auctioned off stuff - birthday auctioned Garth for $10.00 to Joni & books for $5.00, $1.25, $0.75, $2.50, $2.00, $0.25, $0.75, $3.25, & videos for $5.00 & $2.00, then buttons & a fanzine for $5.00, and a box of trailers for $4.00 We adjourned at = 9:38 pm And the rumor of the week was = ‘BASFA: going Dutch’ |
