FIRST Lego League needs volunteers starting this weekend and through
December plus an event in January. Any of you could be a judge or
referee. Can you help? FIRST is great for encouraging kids to be
interested in robotics and technology. ~Elise
FIRST Lego League (FLL) develops critical skills in science and
technology in a super-charged learning atmosphere. The competition
involves teams of students, ages 9 to 14. This year, more than 9,200
teams from 45 countries will be inspired to learn more about
NanoTechnology (this year's theme). The teams design, build, program
and test an autonomous Lego Mindstorms robot engineered to solve 9
challenges that relate to real world problems developed by experts in
NanoTechnology. In addition, the teams learn about and create an
innovative project solution that focuses on issues relevant to
Nanotechnology. Students acquire skills such as problem solving, project
management, critical thinking and teamwork: skills necessary to their
future and the future of society.

More details:

Description of the event: Volunteers are needed to enable 250
Northern California Lego Robotics teams to compete at one of the FIRST
LEGO
League tournaments. Each event requires many volunteers with a broad
spectrum of talents to support teams, volunteers, audience members and
competition demands. We
cannot hold the competitions without volunteers. A variety of volunteer
positions are available both technical and non-technical. Many positions
are available for those with no prior experience with a robotics
competitions.

Description of the volunteer duties: Some volunteer positions, like a
judge, require the ability to sit for long periods of time. Some
volunteer positions, like referee, require the ability to stand for long
periods of time. Many of the general volunteer positions can be half
day or shared with other volunteers. A limited number of volunteer
positions can be done by mature youth volunteers. Also, there is a need
for pre-event setup [day before] and post-event clean up [late in the
day of the event].
