There has been a fair amount of discussion on this topic over the
years.  It has been my experience that one gets the best conversion
rates from credit cards (in particular, Amex) and ATMs.  If you do the
ATM thing, two pieces of advice:

1) many charge by transaction rather than as a percentage of withdrawl
amount, so it is best to try and guess how much you'll need and get it
in one shot.
2) if you have joint checking and savings, international ATMs
sometimes lack the ability to choose accounts, so make sure you have
covering funds in BOTH accounts.
