Adrienne
Will be sporadic at BASFA through August, as she is busy putting together a
ghost walk for WorldCon76, plus a ton of personal business.
If anybody has any ghost stories about downtown SJ (or know anyone) please
contact Adrienne. She would love to have some first hand stories for her ghost
walk.

CostumeCon is in San Diego this coming weekend. WorldCon76 is hosting a light
lunch on Saturday, which will feature the Eurovision final’s live feed.
Radar will also be at CostumeCon, bidding for CostumeCon39 in San Jose in 3
years (April 16 to 19, 2021). Site selection is this weekend. The theme is
“Things that go bump in the night.”

Reviews

Bill
Saw The Avengers: Infinity War on opening weekend. captain America: Civil War
was a superhero movie. Wonder Woman was a superhero with war. Infinity War is a
war movie with superheroes. Lot going on. Worth full price.
Mo: Typical of Marvel storytelling in superheroes v superheroes, then joining
together to fight a big bad.
Carole: Stan Lee has a cute cameo. Theres an easter egg worth staying for.

Valerie
Went to WestSac Expo yesterday. Cute little Star Wars weekend expo. Mostly a
dealers room with a little programming (with some Star Wars actors). Discovered
that there’s a Fentons at the Nut Tree (excellent!)
The Holy Land by Robert Zubrin. The aliens land and it’s a allegory for the
founding of Israel with aliens. The book is 10 years old. Quite impressed.
Vikas: Saw the author talk. He’s very assertive and strongly opinionated.
Interesting person.

Vikas
Saw Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Absolutely enjoyed it. Favorite Star Wars film
after Return of the Jedi. Liked how Kylo Ren was trying to lure Rey to his
side. Quite solid, worth watching again.

Gerold
Confessions of a Con Runner: Contact ended up about $6500 in the red. Only had
70 of the 140 attendees needed. Was up against SiliCon Valley ComicCon and
other things, plus speaker and programming information went out a little too
late. Cautionary tale for other cons. Will do the con again in 2020, probably
at UCSC for less cost than in the SiliCon Valley. [several follow-ons say it
happens to a lot of cons.]

Adrienne
Got her SFGiants gnome. Went for the club level. Crowd was horrendous for a
second game in a double header. Lost the first game, but won the second. Took
off in the 7th inning stretch to avoid the crush.
Mo: Very clean in the club level, and pleasant. Enjoyable. Recommend it if you
can splurge.
San Jose and Other Famous Places by Harry Farrell. Former San Jose News
reporter. Kind of a memoir of his time on the news, and presidential visits.
Discovered that the book was published by one of her dads clients (he did the
book’s binding!)
Mccormick and Schmidt in downtown SJ has the best lobster bisque. Rosie
McCann’s in Santana Row is also really good quality food.

Mo
20th season of Midsomer Murders is available on Acorn. 3rd episode has a small
ComicCon. New coroner and forensic by Annette Badland. If you like mysteries,
watch it.

Bradford
Two weekends ago was the George Schlesser Memorial Seminar. Brad’s topic was
Robert A. Heinlein Revisited. Placed him in an 18th century philosophical
context and 19th century romanticism. Audience response was tepid, but some
great one-on-one responses. There were many authors were at the event.

Ken & Jerry
Rock of Ages at Palo Alto Players. Fun show. Ladies will enjoy their Stacee
Jaxx (very Stephen Tyler like, and very shirtless…) A bit more of a comedy than
the film version, with some plot differences. Last shows this week - Thursday
through Sunday.

There was an auction.

The meeting adjourned at: 21:06 and the Rumor of the week was: Jar Jar Binks
will be the last Jedi
