accepted as: Pre Columbian

Correction: Gerald moved that the 1492 committee come to be, and Kennita

The Treasurer was not present, but it was presumed that we have money.

The Vice President had nothing fannish to report.

Committee Reports

The Meeting 1492 Committee made the following presentation:

From the 1492 Committee
Kennita Watson, Candy Lowe, Gerald Nordley
To be read into the BASFA minutes of meeting number 1492

We recognize Columbus not for how much he was a man of his times, but how much
he transcended them in navigation and as well as leadership. Leif Erickson as
well.

The role of the Roman Catholic Church and the Inquisition which – in seeking
conversion, dominance, and obedience (which victimized both explorers and
indigenous peoples) – should not be ignored.

The role of diseases, which were nobody’s fault, was important. History is
complex – retroactive PC debatable.

The bottom line is: Those who forget history are condemned to repeat it.

“In 1442, Columbus sailed the ocean blue” - except that whatever he landed on
wasn’t America, and – oops – it was already occupied. But regardless of what
mistakes were made, and who-all wrong whom and just how badly (which could be
debated endlessly) we celebrate 1492 as a trope for exploration and discovery.

When we venture out across the starry sea we hope that both we and whoever we
may encounter will be glad we came.

All hail BASFA #1492!

Reviews

JC
Movie: Captain Marvel. Always questions RottenTomatoes. Anticipation score of
28%, which was removed. This movie kicked-@$$. Strong females is a wonderful,
inspiring film. Stay to the end of the credits. Seen it three times. Go see it
if you haven’t yet. Leans towards being his most favorite Marvel film. The
outfit is great. Better written dialogue. Lot of mid-90s music.
Kennita: Thought is was a passible film. Lead was no Buffy (which she wanted)
Carole: worth full price. Memorial to Stan in the opening.
Samantha: Supporting characters were wonderful.
Bill: Saw IMAX. Had a good time. Worth IMAX. Soundtrack also composed by woman.
Lisa: Loved it. Not OTT on violence. The whole Fam loved it.
JohnO: 3D. Could hear the crowd reacting to the Marvel open. For a 3D
conversion, they did a good job.

Gayle
Went to the Tech. Saw an IMAX movie about how great it is to be an engineer.
Featuring an Arizona high school robotics team that beat MIT.
Disneyland: Liked Space Mountain, Splash Mountain was exciting. Ate at the Blue
Bayou, and watched the pirate ships go by. Did ride Pirates.

There was an auction.

Meeting adjourned at: 20:40, and the rumor was: The world’s controlled by
flerkens, we just live here.
