Reviews

Lisa
GalaxyCon. Went Sunday only. Didn’t see the Shat. Didn’t make it to any panels.
Dealers room was huge. Lots of artists, and bought several cute things. Had a
good time. Got to the Masquerade. It was decent. Some nice costumes, many Anime
ones. Short day, but enjoyable. Media centric. Barry Bostwick was there (nice
old man…) galaxycon.com/pages/galaxycon-san-jose

Yochanan was there the whole weekend, and volunteer (12-hours for the two full
day pass). Very good, but last year was a little more. Eclectic. Some Sci-Fi,
Horror, pop-culture. They’ll be back next year. Had a great time, and plan to
volunteer again.
Lisa: Next year will be the weekend before World Con.
Cliff: At this point, Shatner is his own genre.

Cliff:
Moved here in 1995, and quickly discovered KFJC. A loyal listener for 30 years
now. Turn it on and you get something random. He’s done hours on the air for
donations, read his work on the air, and listener appreciation parties, and
penny pitches. Got to know several DJs. If you’ve never listened, there’s going
to be something for you. (see announcements for how to listen). kfjc.org

Went to WorldCon in Seattle. Many BASFAns were there. Downtown in the
convention center. Big place, high ceilings, so attendance was low density.
Dealers, art & fan tables were all together. Downtown Seattle is no ADA
compliant – lots of stairs. Felt that the con-com ran the show pretty well.
Very smooth experience. Rough edges were smoothed. Panels were fun and
informative. Some will be made available to members. Did his first reading at a
WorldCon (opposite dinner) 20 people came – including someone he’d never met
before. seattlein2025.org <http://seattlein2025.org/>

Yochanan:
Until Dawn (film on Netflix and others) Preview seemed like a horror story, but
also has a time-loop element. Not a great movie (52% RT). Interesting concept.
Based on a video game. Maybe a matinee (if in theatres) Not hugely bloody. C+/B-

Abby’s Fire, by Corrinne Malcolm Ibeling & R.I. Partridge. Abby rebuilds life
after a fire in Ohio. Renovates a building with a dark past. A Mt. Prospect
Mystery. Paranormal light. If you like paranormal mysteries, you may like it.
Picked it up at BayCon. Very happy he read it.

Extinction (Netflix, 2018) Very ambitious, Interesting ideas. Michael Pena
(AntMan) is in it, but slightly wasted. Meh twist, competently done. 32% RT.
It is Sci-Fi. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extinction_(2018_film)

Rick:
Foundation (TV+) Currently in the third season. Wow. More impressive with each
episode. The Asimov trilogy was not cinematic. The series is more of a jazz
riff on the novels. Enough changes to keep you on the edge of your seat, with
justice to the spirit of the novels. If you haven’t been watching, you’re
missing out. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foundation_(TV_series)
Yochanan: Not as happy with the changes. The third series, and some of the
ideas have been good. Also, highly recommends.

Went to Norway & Denmark for a couple weeks. Norwegian culture is his culture,
but still alien. Not very European, definitely no where near American. Went on
a SeaDream cruise down to Oslo. Visited Slartibartfast’s fjords, but wonders
how people can liver there – but still pines for them. Would probably do it
again.

Rumor of the Week:

Thank you, Slartibartfast.
