You might want to try java -Djava.awt.fonts=/usr/lib/j2sdk1.3/jre/lib/fonts:/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TrueType/ my.foo.Bar That helped my a lot when running batik and Cocoon headless with pja.
