Why would you use BMP (ugly format and proprietary) over PNG (supports more
features and open)?
To put a slightly ness negative spin on it, given you have a library to
write BMP using Batik to generate the bitmap to write out isn't hard, just look
at the existing PNG and JPEG transcoders.
