Hi Charles:

Batik is intended to require Java 2, in practice that means JDK1.2.2 or
higher due to some important bug fixes.

However I believe that there are a few 1.3 dependencies in the code at
the moment, which were discovered too near the 1.0 release to remove. I
believe that they can be treated as bugs to be fixed (possibly they are
already being tracked in bugzilla, someone else should be able to add
some detail).

If you really need to run on 1.2.2 in the meantime, you can probably
track down the dependencies yourself and work around them. As far as I
know the plan is still for Batik to be usable on 1.2.2. Nonetheless 1.3
is known to give substantially better performance and is highly
recommended if it is available for your platform.

Best regards,

-Bill
