Thanks for the help. I checked out the source, but unfortunately, I seem
to be having trouble compiling stuff. As a complete newbie to all things
programming, finding out what I'm doing wrong is pretty daunting.
Does the Batik team have a tentative date for a next binary release
(1.6.1 or something like that)? I've looked on the website, but I don't
see anything.

The "idealVerSpacing" is one that uses lr-tb to kind of look like what
I'm going for in terms of vertical spacing.
I don't know if MS Gothic has vertical metrics, but I would be
surprised if it didn't. It's a pretty standard Japanese font.
Incidentally, ASV 3.0 renders the tb-rl version correctly.

Could you provide a link to the svg as well?
Does the font you are using have vertical metrics?
