It would be useful if there could be a central database for all java jars, so
a tool like Eclipse or NetBeans could go off and fetch source or bin .jars
as required.

Probably already discussed before but worth a mention.

Java benefits from a fairly central standard which would make this easier
because there aren't too many different flavours - as in the case of Linux.
CD Audio title track database lie CDDB.org does well.
