I've been using the latest VM with Emacs 20.x, starting with 20.2 up
until now (20.7).
After removing the check in VM that causes it to fail, I've never seen
any real problems. There used to be an issue where enabling font-lock
in a vm-mail buffer caused sending binary attachments to fail, but
that's been fixed in the latest code.
YMMV. It doesn't seem like Kyle is going to do much about supporting VM
in Emacs 20.x any time soon; it's been almost a year since the last
release of VM.
