Trouble with names containing non-ASCII characters

BBDB seems to have trouble with names containing non-ASCII characters.
In the display of gnus all names having a non-ASCII character as the
second letter get identified as me. (The second letter of my first
name is (La)TeX \aa).

Does someone have any ideas where I should start looking for the problem?
