A more comprehensible description of the problem:
I discovered that all posters with a name starting with "H" and a
non-ASCII Norwegian letter as the second letter of their name (not
that uncommon in Norway) were displayed as me in gnus. (I have
bbdb/gnus-header-prefer-real-names set to t.)
After some poking around I found that mail-extract-address-components
gave all these names as "H." (The second letter of my first name is --
as I stated in my previous, ill-considered mail -- (La)TeX {\aa}):
(mail-extract-address-components "From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (H�vard Fosseng)")
("H." "From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]")
and that at some point I had answered yes to BBDB's question about
adding "H." as an AKA for myself.
