This is more than just waiting on a compute-intensive task to finish.
My BBDB has about 750 entries in it and used to come qup quite
quickly.  My GNUS killed newsgroup listing in thousands of groups long
and only used to take a few seconds to come up.

I don't know when, but something changed to slow things down.  It may
have been when I was migrated from FSF Emacs 19.21 to 19.22.

As for GNUS being slow:  I am willing to pay that price for the
convenience of having it within emacs. :-)
