I am glad to report that this did fix it, using today's bbdb-2.3.tar.gz. A
simple "./configure; make vm" followed by copying of the files below
/usr/local/lib/xemacs did the trick.
I did need to define
;; This is needed to bind completion for bbdb
(add-hook 'mail-setup-hook
'(lambda () (local-set-key "\t" 'bbdb-complete-name)))
to get completion on TAB.
I suspect that the problems I was having might be related to the Debian
package. I will see what I can find out.
