It sounds as though either BBEdit or the OS is trying to combine the separate letters f and i into the "expert" combination fi. However, it also sounds as if the font you've chosen doesn't have the fi combination. I don't know how to turn off this behavior, but I'll bet that you could change the font and get the correct appearance.
