Which behavior is pretty much required as many programs still handle
only Mac line endings on the clipboard, to do otherwise would be

I'm not sure if it is technically documented anywhere, but basically,
text on the clipboard should have Mac line endings, although programs
should deal with any line endings when reading the clipboard or a
file.
