As a side note, I've evaluated TextMate, and find that their open file dialog has a nice feature. Select "File > Open" and you can immediately hit a '/' key and get a "Go to directory" sheet, in which I enter "/usr/local/qt", and that becomes the active directory -- and I can navigate to the appropriate directory and find the file I was looking for.
As far as I know, TextMate seems to be introducing a non-standard behavior in Mac OS X.
BBEdit follows the standard convention of using shift-command-G to open a "Go to Folder..." dialog. This is the same key combination used by the Finder and other apps.
