Not true: Open Disk Utility in the utilities folder, Choose File >> New >> Disk Image From Folder… The default format is a compressed disk image. Uncompressed disk images can be converted with the same utility.

It was once difficult to pass a Mac application file through a Windoze machine. It's now equally difficult in a modern Mac. Some call it Gresham's law.
