Thanks Ken for that great explanation.

Coming from Dreamweaver, I'm finding it hard to understand what
BBEdit's Web Site Preferences does. To me, if you define a web site
in the Prefs dialog box, there should be an easy way to access your
list of sites from within BBEdit. A file group wouldn't be it because
the lists of files are static--if you add another file via the
finder, it's not updated in the File Group. So that leaves the Disk
Browser, but I see no easy way of creating a reference to the site
folder within BBEdit.

BBEdit's use of site definitions is different but not necessarily less
useful than Dreamweaver's. Sites are defined in BBEdit so that they
are available for functions such as sitewide updating, syntax
checking, link and image checking, site-specific templates, etc. etc.
If you use BB includes, you will find it most useful to be able to
update an entire site at a time.

DW does create a file list based on your site definition but -- for my
purposes -- it is more than what I want and is not configurable. For
example, support folders and their contents are always included. If
you maintain a folder of your Fireworks png documents withing the site
structure, that folder will always be part of the DW file listing. To
my mind, that is unneccessary clutter. Although BBedit does require
you to update your file group manually -- either by dragging new files
to the group or by using Add Files or Add Folder -- it does allow you
to add only those files you actually want to see and access. And you
can order these files as you see fit, something impossible to do in DW
file listings. I may keep my CSS files in their own folder but since I
access my main stylesheet so frequently, I like to keep display it out
of its folder and at the top of my file group for easy reference. I
couldn't do that with DW.

BBEdit file groups also allow me to add files that are not within the
site's folder. For example, when clients send me text documents with
site text -- files I only need during development -- I keep these in a
separate folder on my desktop. But I do want them available
temporarily in that site's file group.

I very much prefer constructing a file group to my own preferences --
rather than being stuck with DW's auto-created file listings.
