I upgraded to BBEdit 8.5 sometime last fall, and the FTP protocol,
which used to be a seamless/transparent part of my workflow, has been
driving me round the bend. I've finally had the time to search
through the online list archive, and I see this was discussed at
length last September and October.
What I'm still not able to understand after reading through the
messages is *why* this ever became a problem in the new versions, and
why it isn't being addressed. If at least a good portion of us were
thrilled with how the protocol worked in the first place, why was it
changed, and why can't it be changed back?
Auto-connect was a check-box before; why can't that still be an
option? I, like several others, hate having to grab my mouse each
time I want to open a file from the server.
I'm also terrifically frustrated by the semi-constant need to
disconnect and reconnect the FTP browser in order to be able to save
files that I opened only a few minutes ago, or else use the "save to
FTP/SFTP server" option. The "secret preferences" FTP/SFTP timeout
setting was reported to help, but it is no longer listed in version
8.6.
Also there's a disconnect when I want to open a recent file that I've
been working on from the server. I'm asked for the server password,
rather than having it pulled automatically from the server as it was
when I initially opened it. What a kludge! I have the password saved
in the FTP browser connection; why can't BBEdit access that?
I want the old functionality back! Perhaps all the other software
suggested would work fine, but if I'm going to have to go out of my
way to figure out how to use it, I'd like to at least know why it was
necessary to change a protocol that as far as I can see was working
beautifully.
Best,
Shelda
