The file (i have the original) has 120 lines, after she'd reloaded it,
it had about double that. Like a extra line inserted every time there
was a line-return.

Hi Patrick:

Thanks very much for your help.

The original file probably has inconsistent line endings. If so, this is
pretty easy to fix:

I wonder what inconsistent line endings are. maybe it had them but don't know.

* bring up BBEdit's Open dialog (File -> Open)

* turn off the "Translate Line Breaks" option

* open the file

* apply Normalize Line Endings (Text -> Normalize Line Endings)

* since you'll be sharing the file between Macs and PCs, set the line
  ending format to "Windows (CRLF)" via the popup at the bottom center
  of the window

we played back and forth and finally got it "fixed", i think maybe by turning on the Windows (CRLF) bit.

do appreciate the help, it would have been "crazy making" otherwise.

cheers and all the best,
Donna
