The Académie Française statistics may be true, but your conclusion
probably isn't. Compare the income of French speakers with those who
speak English. I'm surprised that they are still fighting the battle.
By the way, I love French, it's a beautiful language and useful in
West Africa where I'll be traveling for two months at the end of the
year.

Nearly everything I publish is in French, and quotes are enclosed
in guillemets, « and ». Quotes within quotes are enclosed within
single quotes, leaving double quotes for use in tags.
A member of the Académie française said recently that more people
speak French than any other language, and if you believe that then
working in French rather than English or Spanish should have no
adverse effect on your income.
Of course you could just pretend to be French, and use guillemets
until the last minute...
