It would be so nice if bbedit would have a feature that if you select a word in bbedit it will automatically hightlight all other references in that file.

Actually I think the Find All button comes closest. And, even better than FF, if you click the Multi-file search checkbox in the Find/Replace dialog, you will see some intereseting options. Check it out!

What I like about FireFox's implementation is that it highlights the search results in the document, rather than opening another window.

This would be especially handy in BBEdit, if something like Find All or the Quick Search window had an optional feature to just highlight all of the matches in the frontmost document, especially if it could keep them highlighted as I work through the document.

Say, for example, that I need to change something near many uses of "def" in a Ruby file. I could Quick Search (Highlight All) for "def", and then just quickly scan through the document, changing what needs to be changed without ever taking my hands off of the keyboard.

Yes, "Find Next" technically works that way, too, but it doesn't really allow for the quick visual scanning in the same way that just highlighting does. (Sometimes I want one, sometimes the other.) Obviously we're all different, but I know that sometimes the "jump" caused by Find Next breaks the context, and I have to spend at least a few seconds figuring out where I am in the file.

So, not that it matters, but I'll second Fred's request. I think it's a great idea.
