Mike, I have to agree with Steve, a text editor is a personal choice and we often have very strange reasons for preferring one over the other. As evidenced by the long running feud between emacs and vi(m), there probably will never be a resolution. BBEdit itself prefers emacs whereas I prefer vim.
Having owned/used BBEdit forever and TextMate since it first came out, I rarely warm up TextMate. TextMate is like a real fancy/pretty car that rides smooth and you can pick chicks up in but when it comes to being serious about work, one jumps in a pickup. BBEdit isn't as prettified as TextMate but it works like I do and I get a lot more done with it. The latest version (9) has seemed to reduce my workflow time significantly even with having to learn new keystrokes and the like. I am a web developer, writing php, html, css, javascript (DOM), python with occasional c++. BBEdit is automatically launched on boot up (along with iTerm), I use it all the time.
