There are several, and it sounds pretty simple to me. Use the commands 'run unix script' or 'run unix filter'. If need to have AppleScript create the Unix script or filter on the fly then do so. But if you're "at a loss in AppleScript", as you say, then you're at a disadvantage. If you don't know how to write a file in AppleScript then you may be some distance from a solution.
