If the file is just viewed without being edited/updated, then delete the backup when the file is closed or when BBEdit is shut-down. If it worked this way, you would have the backup you wanted. Note: I am not critiquing the current method (which I assume is a rename of the file just prior to doing the save of the updated version under the original name) but only suggesting a safer but more labor intensive method.
