With a ginned-up file containing entities for alpha, beta, gamma in both
cases, these display correctly in BBEdit's Preview and in Firefox.

So, off-hand I don't know... maybe some font misbehavior on your machine?

If you can toss a Zip of that file to support, I'll be happy to take a look.
