It should be noted that creator codes were not eliminated totally,
they have "evolved." see the article at MacInsider:

The creator code as a valid mechanism was truthfully on its way out
the day Mac OS X came out.. The split data/resource file idea of pre-
MacOSX was a great idea but has to be modified to work in the wider
world of *nix. I don't see Apple going backwards on this. At this
point, it is up to the developers to fully implement the UTI so we can
get some of the creator code functionality back but in the end, we
have to change with the times or find ourselves left behind.
