I was under the impression that UTI in fact does allow for:

1. A document type to have a default application open it if they
follow the public.file_type UTI or don't have a UTI but have an file
extension that matches a public UTI, etc.
2. A document saved in an application that is UTI compliant and saves
documents with the appropriate UTI will be able to be opened by
default by that application following the com.mycompany.file_type UTI
convention.

This of course may be my misunderstanding of Apple's documentation at
http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/documentation/FileManagement/Conceptual/understanding_utis/understand_utis_intro/understand_utis_intro.html

I don't see how the UTI is attached to the file which is the only way
I can think of to make it app specific, at least not for text files
but then, most of my text files go back and forth between Mac and
Linux, Subversion, git and other stuff that resource fork is always
lost anyway, no creator code for me!

I have to admit, I stopped using creator code clickability a while
back because it only frustrated me. I don't know how many times I have
screamed, "No Not that App, I don't care who created you!" I am a drag
and drop or command line (thank you BareBones) kind of guy now.
