Oh. My. God. Toadling, you are a hero! It was item #2 that fixed it. The HTML language preferences were set to show invisibles. I would NEVER have discovered that on my own, buried as it is (and I mean BURIED) in the Languages pane. It's probably covered in the user guide under "Languages," but it was not covered in the section on "Show Invisibles", and it didn't come up in a search of 'show invisibles.' This should definitely be changed.
BTW, one correction: In my version (9.3.1) the path to the preference setting is Preferences -> Languages -> [desired language] -> Options - > Editing -> Show invisibles" checkbox. Thanks again!
