On earlier versions of the Apple OS you could get that effect by changing the name of the program during, or before, the install process. Applications seemed to know their new name and use it while setting up preference files in the System folder. I don't know if that's done by default in OS neXt but it certainly would be possible for Bare Bones to do things that way.
