You should be able to run 8.7.2. and 9.6.x side by side. They'll
share preferences, and in some cases 9.x uses a newer storage
format that will be created and managed separately from what's
already there. It's not supported, but at the moment I can't
think of a reason why it wouldn't work (whereas trying to
shuffle preferences when using different versions has more
potential to cause trouble).
