I tried logging out and back in. This did not resolve the problem. I tried rebooting the MBP. This did not resolve the problem.
--- Just as an aside from a software perspective, if there are preferences which require a restart of either software, user session, or a machine, the user should always be made aware of that immediately in the software, along with a note in the documentation.
