I’m a very longtime customer of Bare Bones, and have been upgrading my
BBEdit license directly with each release.

Thanks for your support! :-)

I’m curious though, now, if there are advantages or disadvantages to
staying with a directly purchased/upgraded version of BBEdit versus
purchasing the upgrade during this pricing window via the Mac App
Store. What’s the Bare Bones worldview with regards to the two
distribution channels? Would you prefer that your customers go one
way or the other?

In BBEdit and TextWrangler, authenticated saves (the ability to save changes to files that you do not own) and the command-line tools are not available in the Mac App Store versions, in order to comply with Apple’s submission guidelines. If that consideration doesn't affect you, then there is no product-related reason to choose one over the other.

(Aside: many folks have asked about converting their existing BBEdit licenses to the Mac App Store. That isn't possible, but we designed the introductory price to match the upgrade price, so that if you wish, you can upgrade to 10 *and* convert to the Mac App Store, without having to pay a penalty for the ability.)

Speaking as a businessman, we make more money on each direct sale than we do on each Mac App Store sale, and that adds up over time. That said, a sale's a sale :-) and in the grand scheme of things, we try not to bother our customers with the inner workings of the sausage factory.

For me personally, the ease of keeping everything up to date via the
Mac App Store seems like a plus, but I also worry, as always, that I
might have to wait extra time for releases/bug fixes due to the review
window.

Technically, the review process *does* impose an extra delay between when we are done with the code and when it's available in the store itself, but as a developer, I see that as a sausage-factory issue. As a consumer, I find myself unaware in most cases.

Bottom line: it's pretty much up to you. :-)

Someday I'll look back on all this and laugh... until they sedate me.
