...which BBEdit could do, just not as conveniently as Emacs. Which is not an oft-used phrase. :) (Although it would probably be fairly easy to write a text filter to transform delimited text to that after the fact.)

It would also be possible to do it as you went along, just as you would in Excel when you double-click on the column divider. You'd need to replace the tabs with spaces and an invisible character to make the process reversible. I'd write a Perl filter now but I have a lot more important things to do at the moment.
